I’m applying for some public arts projects this month, so today is an office day, and a productive one at that. I’ve almost finished a paragraph. I am on a roll. Only 5 more components to complete. It will take me one week to finish the application if I intersperse it with life and studio. Therefore, today is a solid office day. It is rainy. I have to go for a run between now and 4 pm. I was trying to schedule my run for when there would be a glimpse of sunshine. My weather app promised me there would be some sunshine today. It promised me it would reach 48 degrees. I hit the refresh button and there’s a picture of a dark cloud. The Feels Like temp is thirty-seven. The weather app lies like a dog.

I’m so thrilled to have finally gotten 7 large-ish canvases gessoed. I painted like a maniac the other day. It was my birthday. I stopped in order to socialize at dinner. Between you, me, and the lamp post, I would have preferred to have kept painting. Stopping was good though. The painting deserved a break. I once taught a workshop to intermediate and advanced painters that was 6 hours long. There were about 14 participants at the beginning. I was literally walking around in circles trying to spend time with everyone. A couple of people had to leave after the afternoon break. Having painted for many years, I am used to the hours and relish it, but I take mini-breaks over the course of my studio days. The biggest feedback I got from the workshop was that 6 hours was a really long time to paint, and that I couldn’t get around to everyone as much as some of the participants wanted. I didn’t schedule the duration or the number of participants, so that part was out of my control. It occurred to me that for people who don’t paint as a disciplined activity, painting is tiring. Six hours is a good amount of time for a solid distraction-free painting session. After 6 hours, I feel like I’m in the thick of things. I like working. I actually like being exhausted from a good day at the studio at the end of a long day, but then again, I don’t have a social life.

This work below is a work in progress. I had to leave it at the studio while I work on my application for the public art project. I say it’s in progress, but I might be done. I’ve been having a dialogue with myself on when a painting is finished. It’s an age-old question. I know the answer. The tricky part is walking away before it’s finished. Much harder.

Photo
